Does Aliskiren-Amlodipine-Hydrochlorothiazide Interact With ARBs?

Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers (ARBs)
Aliskiren-amlodipine-hydrochlorothiazide contains an ARB medication (aliskiren). Combining aliskiren-amlodipine-hydrochlorothiazide with other ARBs can increase your risk for high potassium levels in your blood (hyperkalemia). Your healthcare provider should check your potassium levels regularly. However, the hydrochlorothiazide in aliskiren-amlodipine-hydrochlorothiazide can counteract this effect, since hydrochlorothiazide can cause low potassium levels, so this interaction may be somewhat unpredictable.

Combining these medications may also increase the risk of dangerously low blood pressure (hypotension) and kidney failure. Aliskiren-amlodipine-hydrochlorothiazide should never be combined with an ARB in people with diabetes, because they may have a higher risk for these complications. Also, such combinations are not recommended for people with moderate-to-severe kidney problems.

Carbamazepine
Combining aliskiren-amlodipine-hydrochlorothiazide with carbamazepine may lead to dangerously low levels of sodium in the blood. If you must take these medications together, your healthcare provider will need to monitor you closely.

Cyclosporine
Cyclosporine can significantly increase the level of aliskiren (one of the active ingredients in aliskiren-amlodipine-hydrochlorothiazide) in your blood. These drugs should not be taken together.

Digoxin
Aliskiren-amlodipine-hydrochlorothiazide should be used carefully in people taking digoxin. Aliskiren-amlodipine-hydrochlorothiazide can cause changes in potassium levels, which can be especially dangerous for people taking digoxin.

Eplerenone
Combining aliskiren-amlodipine-hydrochlorothiazide with eplerenone can increase your risk for high potassium levels in your blood (hyperkalemia).
