What Is Aliskiren-Amlodipine-Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

If you have high blood pressure that is not adequately controlled with certain blood pressure medications, your healthcare provider may prescribe aliskiren-amlodipine-hydrochlorothiazide. This drug is a combination of three blood pressure medicines, which work together to relax blood vessels, improve blood flow, and reduce blood volume. Aliskiren-amlodipine-hydrochlorothiazide is approved for use in adults only.

An Overview of Uses for Aliskiren-Amlodipine-Hydrochlorothiazide

Aliskiren-amlodipine-hydrochlorothiazide (Amturnide®) is a prescription medication approved for treating high blood pressure (hypertension). It is a combination drug that contains hydrochlorothiazide, aliskiren (Tekturna®), and amlodipine (Norvasc®).

While aliskiren-amlodipine-hydrochlorothiazide is not recommended as the first medication to try when treating high blood pressure, it can be quite effective at treating high blood pressure that has not responded adequately to other medications.

A blood pressure reading consists of two numbers -- for example, 120/80. The top number is known as the systolic blood pressure, and the bottom number is the diastolic blood pressure. High blood pressure is defined as an average blood pressure higher than 140/90, with multiple blood pressure readings.

High blood pressure treatment, including medication, can decrease the risk of developing health problems that can occur with long-term hypertension (see Effects of High Blood Pressure). Some of these health problems can include but are not limited to:

However, medications are not a cure for high blood pressure. Exercise and diet are also important for controlling this condition (see High Blood Pressure Diet and Exercise and High Blood Pressure for more information).
