More Information on Drug Interactions With Aliskiren/Amlodipine

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative reactions that can occur when aliskiren/amlodipine is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

ACE Inhibitors
Taking aliskiren/amlodipine with an ACE inhibitor may increase your risk of high blood potassium (hyperkalemia), a dangerous problem. If you must take these medications together, your healthcare provider should monitor your potassium levels using a simple blood test.

Combining these medications may also increase the risk of dangerously low blood pressure (hypotension) and kidney failure. Aliskiren/amlodipine should never be combined with an ACE inhibitor in people with diabetes, because they may have a higher risk for these complications. Also, such combinations are not recommended for people with moderate-to-severe kidney problems.

Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers (ARBs)
Combining aliskiren/amlodipine with an ARB may increase your risk of high blood potassium (hyperkalemia), which is a dangerous problem. If you must take these medications together, your healthcare provider should monitor your potassium levels during treatment.

Aliskiren/amlodipine should never be combined with an ARB in people with diabetes, because they may have a higher risk for these complications. Also, such combinations are not recommended for people with moderate-to-severe kidney problems.

Atorvastatin Products (Lipitor, Caduet)
Atorvastatin can increase the level of aliskiren/amlodipine in the blood by as much as 50 percent. This could increase your risk of side effects of aliskiren/amlodipine. Your healthcare provider may need to adjust your aliskiren/amlodipine dosage if you start or stop taking atorvastatin, although this may not be necessary in many cases.
