Common Reactions to Aliskiren/Amlodipine

Common Side Effects of Aliskiren/Amlodipine

Aliskiren/amlodipine has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials. In these trials, one group of people was given the real medication, while another group was given a placebo (a "sugar pill" with no active ingredients). This way, it is possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the group who took the placebo.

In these studies, only one common side effect of aliskiren/amlodipine was reported. Swelling (water retention) in the lower limbs, known medically as peripheral edema, was reported in 6.2 to 8.9 percent of people taking aliskiren/amlodipine (depending on the dosage), compared to just 1 percent of people taking the placebo.

Peripheral edema is a known side effect of amlodipine, one of the components of aliskiren/amlodipine. Peripheral edema is common; however, it can be potentially dangerous, particularly for people with congestive heart failure (CHF).

Although peripheral edema was the only common aliskiren/amlodipine side effect seen in clinical trials, it is logical to assume that any of the common side effects of the individual active ingredients in this drug could also happen when they are combined (see Side Effects of Aliskiren and Amlodipine Side Effects for more information).

Final Thoughts

You may experience some or none of the aliskiren/amlodipine side effects listed in this article. Unfortunately, there is no way for your healthcare provider to know beforehand if you will have problems with a medicine that you have never taken.

Therefore, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you develop any side effects while taking the drug or if something "just does not seem right." While it may not be related to aliskiren/amlodipine, your healthcare provider will be able to diagnose and treat the problem.
