Aliskiren and Valsartan

Aliskiren and valsartan is a prescription drug that helps lower blood pressure in adults. It is available as a tablet and is usually taken once a day. Although most people tolerate it well, side effects are possible, such as diarrhea, fatigue, and high potassium levels. Before beginning treatment, tell your healthcare provider if you have kidney disease, liver disease, heart problems, or any allergies.

What Is Aliskiren and Valsartan?

Aliskiren and valsartan (Valturna^®) is a prescription medication approved to treat high blood pressure (known medically as hypertension) in adults. It is a combination of two different medications: Tekturna^® (aliskiren) and Diovan^® (valsartan).

In April 2012, it was decided that this medication should no longer be available, due to the risks it poses to people with diabetes or with moderate-to-severe kidney problems. Production will officially cease in July 2012.

Possible Side Effects

Just like any medicine, aliskiren and valsartan may cause side effects.

However, not everyone who takes the drug will experience problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can be treated easily by you or your healthcare provider. Serious reactions are less common.

Some of the most common aliskiren and valsartan side effects include but are not limited to:

High potassium levels in the blood (hyperkalemia)
Fatigue
Common cold symptoms (such as sore throat and runny nose)
Diarrhea.
