Drugs That Can React With Aliskiren and Valsartan

More Information on Interactions With Aliskiren and Valsartan

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when aliskiren and valsartan is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

ACE Inhibitors
Combining aliskiren and valsartan with an ACE inhibitor may increase your risk of high blood potassium (known medically as hyperkalemia), a dangerous problem. If you take these medications together, your healthcare provider should monitor your potassium levels. Combining these medications may also increase the risk of dangerously low blood pressure (hypotension) and kidney failure.

Amiloride Products (Midamor, Moduretic)
Taking aliskiren and valsartan with amiloride may increase your risk of high blood potassium (hyperkalemia), a dangerous problem. If you take both of these medications, your healthcare provider should monitor your potassium levels.

Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers (ARBs)
Combining aliskiren and valsartan with an ARB may increase your risk of high blood potassium (hyperkalemia), a dangerous problem. If you take these medications together, your healthcare provider should monitor your potassium levels.

Combining aliskiren with an ARB (like valsartan) may also increase the risk of dangerously low blood pressure (hypotension) and kidney failure. Such combinations (such as in this medication) should never be combined with an ARB in people with diabetes, because they may have a higher risk for these complications. Also, such combinations are not recommended for people with moderate-to-severe kidney problems.

Atorvastatin Products (Lipitor, Caduet)
Atorvastatin can increase the level of aliskiren and valsartan in the blood by as much as 50 percent. This could increase your risk of side effects. Your healthcare provider may need to adjust your aliskiren and valsartan dosage if you start (or stop) taking atorvastatin, although this may not be necessary in many cases.
