Possible Side Effects of Amlodipine and Olmesartan
Amlodipine and olmesartan is a combination of two medications,
amlodipine (
Norvasc®) and
olmesartan (
Benicar®). The components of amlodipine and olmesartan have been studied individually in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occur in a group of people taking the drug are documented and then compared to the side effects that occur in another group of people not taking the medicine. As a result, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine.
In studies, the only side effect of the olmesartan (Benicar) component of amlodipine and olmesartan was dizziness (occurring in 3 percent of people). The most common side effects of the amlodipine (Norvasc) component of amlodipine and olmesartan included:
- Swelling or water retention (edema) -- in up to 10.8 percent of people
- Feelings of a rapidly or forcefully beating heart (heart palpitations) -- up to 4.5 percent
- Dizziness -- up to 3.4 percent
- Flushing (redness of the skin, especially the face) -- up to 2.6 percent.
