What Is Amlodipine-Valsartan-Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Amlodipine-valsartan-hydrochlorothiazide is a drug that treats high blood pressure. It is currently the only blood pressure medicine that contains three different drugs in a single tablet. The medication is not approved for use in children or teens, and there are no universally accepted "off-label" uses of amlodipine-valsartan-hydrochlorothiazide at this time.

What Do You Use Amlodipine-Valsartan-Hydrochlorothiazide For?

Amlodipine-valsartan-hydrochlorothiazide (Exforge HCT^®) is a prescription medication approved for treating high blood pressure (hypertension). It is a combination medication that contains hydrochlorothiazide, valsartan (Diovan^®), and amlodipine (Norvasc^®).

While amlodipine-valsartan-hydrochlorothiazide is not recommended as the first medication to try when treating high blood pressure, it can be very useful for treating high blood pressure that has not responded adequately to other medications.

A blood pressure reading consists of two numbers, for example 120/80. The top number is known as the systolic blood pressure, and the bottom number is the diastolic blood pressure. High blood pressure is defined as an average blood pressure higher than 140/90 with multiple blood pressure readings.

High blood pressure treatment (including blood pressure medication) can decrease the risk of developing health problems, such as a stroke, heart disease, or congestive heart failure, that occur with long-term high blood pressure (see Effects of High Blood Pressure).

However, medications are not a cure for high blood pressure. Exercise and diet are also important for controlling high blood pressure (see High Blood Pressure Diet and Exercise and High Blood Pressure for more information).
