Cardizem LA Side Effects
Cough, fatigue, and dizziness are some of the most common side effects that have been reported with Cardizem LA. Side effects that occurred rarely in other diltiazem products (and that may also occur with Cardizem LA) include vomiting, flushing, and nosebleeds. Although most side effects of Cardizem LA are minor, you should seek medical attention immediately if you develop an irregular heart rhythm, chest pain, or depression.
As with any medicine, side effects can occur with Cardizem LA® (diltiazem hydrochloride); however, not everyone who takes the drug will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can be easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Cardizem LA. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list of Cardizem LA side effects with you.)
Cardizem LA has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials, in which a group of people taking the drug have side effects documented and compared to another group not taking the medicine. This way, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine.
In these studies, the most common Cardizem LA side effects included:
- Swelling or water retention in the feet or lower leg (edema) -- in up to 8 percent of people
- Dizziness -- up to 6.4 percent
- Fatigue -- up to 4.8 percent
- Slow heart rate (bradycardia) -- up to 3.6 percent
- Cough -- up to 2 percent
- Sinus congestion -- up to 2 percent
- Rash -- up to 2 percent.
