Generic Cardizem LA

There are currently no generic Cardizem LA products available on the market. The medication is under the protection of a patent that prevents any generic versions from being manufactured in the United States. The earliest possible date that generic Cardizem LA could become available is June 2011, when the patent expires, although its availability could be further delayed.

 

Generic Cardizem LA: An Overview

Cardizem LA® (diltiazem hydrochloride) is a prescription medicine used for the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension) or chest pain (known medically as angina). It is part of a group of medications called calcium channel blockers.
 
Cardizem LA is currently manufactured by Kos Pharmaceuticals, a division of Abbott Pharmaceuticals. At this time, it is under the protection of a patent that prevents any generic Cardizem LA from being manufactured in the United States.
 

When Will Generic Cardizem LA Be Available?

The first patent for Cardizem LA currently expires in June 2011. This is the earliest possible date that a generic version of the drug could become available. However, other circumstances could come up to extend the exclusivity period of the medicine beyond 2011. This could include such things as other patents for specific Cardizem LA uses or lawsuits. Once the patent expires, several companies will likely begin manufacturing a generic Cardizem LA drug.
 

Is Diltiazem the Same as Generic Cardizem LA?

No -- diltiazem is the active ingredient in Cardizem LA, but is not a generic version of it. Many different diltiazem products are available, and none of them are equivalent to Cardizem LA at this time.
