Clonidine hydrochloride (Catapres®, Catapres-TTS®, Duraclon®) is a prescription drug licensed to treat high blood pressure, as well as severe pain in people with cancer. It belongs to a group of medications known as alpha-2 adrenergic agonists, which work by stimulating alpha-2 receptors in the brain stem and blocking pain signals from reaching the brain. The medication comes in the form of an epidural (used for treating cancer pain) and tablets or skin patches (used for treating high blood pressure).
