Diuril Dosage: An Overview
The dose of
Diuril® (
chlorothiazide) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary depending on a number of factors, including:
- Other medical conditions you may have
- Other medications you may currently be taking
- How you respond to Diuril.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
Diuril Dosing for Adults
The recommended starting Diuril dose for
high blood pressure or water retention is 500 to 1000 mg, taken either once a day or split up into two doses per day. Based on the initial
blood pressure response and side effects of Diuril, your healthcare provider may increase (or decrease) your dose if necessary. With each change in dosage, it may take several weeks to see the full blood pressure-lowering effects of Diuril.
People taking Diuril for water retention may not need to take it every day. Some people take the drug every other day (or even less frequently).
Diuril Dosing for Infants and Children
The recommended Diuril dose for children and infants depends on the age and weight of the child. The recommended dose of Diuril is 5 to 10 mg per pound of body weight each day (either taken in one daily dose or two smaller doses per day). Infants younger than six months old may need a higher dose (Diuril 15 mg per pound per day). The maximum Diuril dosage is 375 mg per day (for those 2 years old or younger) or 1000 mg per day (for children 2 to 12 years old).
