Furosemide and Breastfeeding

In clinical studies on breastfeeding and furosemide, the medication was shown to pass through breast milk. However, there have been no reports of problems in either nursing mothers or their infants. If you are taking this drug and breastfeeding, be sure to watch for any side effects or unusual changes in your infant -- just to be safe.

Can I Take Furosemide While Breastfeeding?

Furosemide (Lasix®) passes through breast milk. Because of the potentially serious side effects that could occur in the nursing infant, the manufacturer recommends that the medication be used with caution in breastfeeding women. Therefore, be sure to let your healthcare provider know if you are breastfeeding or thinking of breastfeeding while taking this drug.
 

What Does the Research Say?

While furosemide is passed through breast milk, there have been no reports of problems in women who are nursing or their babies.
