Furosemide Dosing

General Furosemide Dosing Information

Some considerations for people taking furosemide include:

  • Furosemide comes in tablet form. It is usually taken by mouth once or twice a day, although it may be taken several times a day in certain circumstances.

  • It does not matter if you take furosemide with or without food.

  • If necessary, furosemide tablets may be split in half.

  • Elderly people should start with a low furosemide dosage, as they may be more likely to experience furosemide side effects.

  • Furosemide should be taken at the same time(s) each day to maintain an even level of furosemide in your blood. However, some people do not need to take furosemide every day, especially people taking it for fluid retention.

  • Because furosemide increases urination, it is best to take it in the morning (to avoid needing to get up to use the bathroom throughout the night). If you take furosemide multiple times per day, it is best to take the last dose of the day before 6 p.m. (unless you are instructed otherwise).

  • For furosemide to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed. Furosemide will not work if you stop taking it.

  • If you are unsure about anything related to furosemide or your furosemide dosage, please talk to your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
