A Detailed Look at These Medications
As a whole, the different categories of
hypertension medications are known as "antihypertensives." In the following sections, each variety of these antihypertensives is described in more detail.
Alpha Blockers
Alpha blockers cut down on nerve impulses to blood vessels. This allows the blood to pass through the vessels more easily, causing
blood pressure to go down.

Beta Blockers
Beta blockers slow down the heart rate and reduce the heart's blood output. They do this by reducing nerve impulses to the heart and blood vessels. This causes the heart to beat more slowly and with less force. This results in a decrease in blood pressure, so the heart doesn't need to work as hard.
Beta blockers employed as medications for hypertension include:
Alpha-Beta Blockers
Alpha-beta blockers work the same way as alpha-blockers do, but they also slow down the heart rate (they are similar to beta-blockers in this regard). As a result of this type of
blood pressure medication, less blood is pumped through the blood vessels and the blood pressure goes down.
Carvedilol (
Coreg®) is an alpha-beta blocker used for the
treatment of hypertension.
