Things to Remember

Treatment of hypertension can require considerable time and patience -- both for you and your healthcare team. Taking medication for hypertension (and possibly experiencing side effects) can be frustrating, especially if you felt fine before you started treatment. Don't lose sight of the fact that blood pressure is only lowered while you are taking these medications. That's why the medications can't be stopped in most cases, even after blood pressure is lowered.
 
Try not to get discouraged if you must be treated indefinitely. Some people are able to reduce their drug dosages after achieving normal blood pressure and maintaining it for a year or more; some are note. The good news is that most people who are successfully treated for hypertension usually live a long and healthy life.
