Things to Remember About Signs and Symptoms of Hypertension

Hypertension can go unrecognized for years, not causing any recognizable signs or symptoms. But this does not mean that damage is not occurring. In fact, high blood pressure causes damage gradually. Chronic hypertension affects body structures such as the:

Heart
Kidneys
Eyes
Brain
Blood vessels.

Types of organ damage commonly seen in people with chronic hypertension include:

Congestive heart failure (CHF)
Heart attack
Stroke or "mini stroke" -- also known as a transient ischemic attack (TIA)
Peripheral arterial disease, including bulges or outpouchings of the aorta (called aneurysms)
Kidney failure
Eye damage (with associated loss of vision).
