Types of Medication Used in the Treatment of Hypertension

There are several types of hypertension medications. In many cases, a combination of antihypertensive drugs works better than a single medication. The types of medication commonly used for hypertension treatment include:
 
  • Beta blockers
  • Diuretics
  • Calcium channel blockers (CCBs)
  • Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors) 
  • Alpha blockers
  • Alpha-beta blockers
  • Nervous system inhibitors
  • Vasodilators
  • Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs).
