Side Effects of Irbesartan/HCTZ

The blood pressure drug irbesartan/HCTZ is known to cause side effects like dizziness, tiredness, and muscle pain, among others. These reactions are typically minor and easily treated. However, there are other potential problems that should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider, such as difficulty breathing, fainting, or yellowing of the whites of the eyes or skin.

An Introduction to Side Effects of Irbesartan/HCTZ

Just like any medicine, irbesartan/HCTZ (Avalide®) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

Serious Irbesartan/HCTZ Side Effects

Some irbesartan/HCTZ side effects are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
 
  • Signs of very low blood pressure (hypotension), such as dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting
  • Changes in vision or eye pain 
  • Signs of liver problems, such as:
 
    • Dark urine
    • Loss of appetite
    • Fatigue or excessive tiredness
    • Pain in the right upper part of the abdomen (stomach)
    • Yellowing of the whites of the eyes or skin (jaundice)
 
  • Changes in body electrolytes (such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium), which may cause the following symptoms:
 
    • Dry mouth
    • Feeling thirsty
    • Feeling weak
    • Extreme tiredness
    • Restlessness
    • Confusion
    • Muscle pains or cramps
    • Nausea and vomiting
    • Seizures
    • Decrease in urination
    • Increased heart rate (tachycardia)
 
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
 
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Swelling of the mouth or throat
    • Wheezing
    • Difficulty breathing.
