Clinical Effects of Azilsartan

Clinical studies have shown that azilsartan lowers blood pressure in people with hypertension more than a placebo (a "sugar pill" that does not contain any active ingredients). Probably more importantly, studies have also shown that azilsartan lowers blood pressure more effectively than olmesartan (Benicar®) and losartan (Cozaar®), two other medications that are similar to azilsartan.

When and How to Take This Medication

Some general considerations to keep in mind during treatment with azilsartan include the following:
  • Azilsartan comes in tablet form. It is usually taken by mouth once a day.
  • Try to take your dose at the same time each day to maintain an even level in your blood.
  • You can take azilsartan with or without food.
  • For this medication to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed.

Storage Information

Azilsartan should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture. Keep this and all medications out of the reach of children. Do not repackage azilsartan, and do not allow your pharmacist to repackage it.
This medicine should be kept in its original packaging; it should not be stored in a pharmacy bottle or in a pill-reminder box. The original packaging is specially designed to protect the medication from light and moisture.

Is There a Generic Version?

This medication is not available in generic form (see Generic Edarbi for more information).
