Healthcare providers often recommend lifestyle changes first to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). For example, a person who has recently been diagnosed with high blood pressure may try the following:

  • Cutting back on salt
  • Eating a diet that emphasizes fruits and vegetables.
While these lifestyle changes may be enough for some people, others may require medications for hypertension, such as beta blockers, diuretics, or angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors.
