Procardia XL Side Effects

For people who are taking Procardia XL, side effects may occur. Some of the most common side effects of Procardia XL can include swelling, headaches, and fatigue. In most cases, side effects are minor and can easily be treated. However, if you experience more serious side effects of Procardia XL (such as chest pain, depression, or temporary blindness), be sure to contact your healthcare provider right away.

Procardia XL Side Effects: An Introduction

As with any medicine, there are possible side effects with Procardia XL® (nifedipine). However, not everyone who takes the medication will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. When side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Common Procardia XL Side Effects

Procardia XL has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials in which the side effects of a group of people taking the drug are documented and compared to another group not taking the medicine.
 As a result, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine.
 
In these studies, the most common Procardia XL side effects included:
 
  • Swelling or water retention (edema) -- in up to 30 percent of people
  • Headaches -- up to 15.8 percent
  • Fatigue -- up to 5.9 percent
  • Constipation -- up to 3.3 percent
  • Nausea -- up to 3.3 percent.
