More Info on Propranolol/HCTZ Interactions
Bile Acid Sequestrant Cholesterol Medications
Bile acid sequestrant medications can bind to propranolol/HCTZ in the gastrointestinal tract and decrease the amount of the medication absorbed into the bloodstream. To help minimize this interaction, propranolol/HCTZ should be taken at least one hour before or four to six hours after a bile acid sequestrant.
Taking propranolol/HCTZ with calcitriol may cause an elevated blood calcium level (hypercalcemia). Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor your blood calcium levels if you take these medications together.
Calcium Channel Blockers
Combining propranolol/HCTZ with certain calcium channel blockers may cause dangerously low blood pressure, a slow heart rate (bradycardia), and possibly heart failure. If your healthcare provider recommends a calcium channel blocker with propranolol/HCTZ, you will likely need very close monitoring.
Calcium Supplements or Calcium-Containing Antacids
Taking propranolol/HCTZ with calcium products may increase blood calcium levels (hypercalcemia). Talk to your healthcare provider before using calcium supplements or antacids that contain calcium if you are taking propranolol/HCTZ.
Propranolol/HCTZ may increase the levels of certain triptans in your blood, potentially increasing your risk for side effects. Your healthcare provider may choose to give you a lower triptan dosage, or give you a triptan that does not interact with propranolol/HCTZ. In general, it may be best to avoid using these drugs together.
If you take clonidine and propranolol/HCTZ together, stopping clonidine without stopping propranolol/HCTZ could increase the risk for dangerously high blood pressure, strokes, or other serious problems. You should stop taking propranolol/HCTZ several days before gradually reducing the dose of clonidine. Your healthcare provider will advise you how to do this -- do not attempt it without your healthcare provider's approval and supervision. If you are switching from clonidine to propranolol/HCTZ, wait several days after stopping clonidine before starting propranolol/HCTZ.
