Propranolol Sustained-Release Dosage

People with high blood pressure or migraines are often prescribed a propranolol sustained-release dosage of 80 mg a day. The usual dose for hypertrophic subaortic stenosis ranges from 80 mg to 160 mg a day. People with angina are typically given between 80 mg and 320 mg a day. Your actual propranolol sustained-release dosage will vary, based on factors like age and other medications you are taking.

Propranolol Sustained-Release Dosage: An Introduction

The dose of propranolol hydrochloride sustained-release (Inderal® LA) that your healthcare provider prescribes will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:

  • Your age
  • The medical condition you are being treated for
  • Other medical conditions you may have
  • Other medications you are currently taking
  • How you respond to propranolol sustained-release.

As always, do not adjust your propranolol sustained-release dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Propranolol Sustained-Release Dose for High Blood Pressure

The recommended starting dosage of propranolol sustained-release for people with high blood pressure (hypertension) is 80 mg once a day. After a couple of weeks, based on the blood pressure response and/or propranolol sustained-release side effects, the dosage may be increased or decreased. Your healthcare provider may also add a diuretic (a "water pill") or another blood pressure medication if your blood pressure is not controlled by propranolol sustained-release alone.

The usual propranolol sustained-release dosage for most people is somewhere between 120 mg to 160 mg once a day, although sometimes much higher dosages are necessary.
