Drug Interactions With Telmisartan

When certain medicines are taken together, there is a possibility of developing drug interactions. With telmisartan, drugs such as potassium supplements, warfarin, or potassium-sparing diuretics may cause an interaction. Not only can drug interactions with telmisartan cause your body to metabolize the medicines differently than intended, but they may also result in side effects such as extremely low blood pressure or excessive drug levels in your blood.

Drug Interactions With Telmisartan: An Overview

Telmisartan (Micardis®) can potentially interact with a number of other medicines. Some of these telmisartan interactions can include:

Diuretics
When you are taking telmisartan with a diuretic, your blood pressure may decrease too much. This is more likely to occur when telmisartan is first started. In order to decrease the chances of developing this telmisartan interaction, your healthcare provider may change the dosages of either medicine, start you on a lower dose of telmisartan, and/or monitor you more closely.

Potassium Supplements
If you are taking a potassium supplement with telmisartan, the levels of potassium in your blood may become too high. This can cause serious problems. For your particular situation, talk to your healthcare provider about using potassium and telmisartan together.
