Understanding How Teveten HCT Works and Specific Uses

How Does Teveten HCT Work?

Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), one of the medicines in Teveten HCT, is a diuretic or "water pill." It works by increasing the amount of salt and water the kidneys remove from the blood. This extra salt and water is then passed out through the urine. The removal of salt and water decreases blood volume, resulting in lower blood pressure.
The other component of this medication, eprosartan, belongs to a class of drugs called angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). Angiotensin II is a naturally occurring chemical in the body that causes blood vessels to narrow (constrict). By blocking angiotensin II, eprosartan helps to relax the blood vessels, which lowers blood pressure.

Can Children Use It?

Teveten HCT is not approved for use in children (normally defined as people younger than 18 years of age). It is not known if this medication is safe or effective in this age group.

Can Older Adults Use It?

Yes -- older adults can use Teveten HCT. However, some older adults may be more sensitive to the effects of the medication and may need to take a lower dose when starting treatment.

Off-Label Teveten HCT Uses

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend this medication for something other than the treatment of high blood pressure. This is called an "off-label" use. There are no widely accepted off-label uses for Teveten HCT at this time.
