Trandate Uses

Approved uses for Trandate primarily involve the treatment of high blood pressure in adults. Although the medication does not cure high blood pressure, it can help control it. Trandate may be used for certain "off-label" uses, such as treating the symptoms of pheochromocytoma.

What Is Trandate Used For?

Trandate® (labetalol hydrochloride) is a prescription medication that has been licensed to control high blood pressure (hypertension).
 

Using Trandate for High Blood Pressure

A blood pressure reading consists of two numbers (for example, 120/80). The top number is known as the systolic blood pressure, and the bottom number is the diastolic blood pressure. High blood pressure (hypertension) is defined as an average blood pressure higher than 140/90 mmHg (millimeters of mercury) with multiple blood pressure readings.
 
Based on clinical studies, Trandate has been shown to significantly lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The higher the dose, the greater the drop in blood pressure is expected to be. By lowering blood pressure, the medication can decrease the risk of developing health problems, such as a stroke, heart disease, or congestive heart failure, that occur with long-term hypertension (see Effects of High Blood Pressure). Trandate is not a cure for high blood pressure, however.
 

Trandate Uses in Children

This medicine has not been approved for use in children, although Trandate may be used off-label to treat several conditions in children.
 

Is Trandate Used for Off-Label Reasons?

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend this drug for treating something other than high blood pressure.
 This is called an "off-label" use. An example of an off-label Trandate use involves prescribing the medication to treat pheochromocytoma symptoms.
