Drug Interactions With Valsartan and Hydrochlorothiazide

More Detail About Valsartan and Hydrochlorothiazide Interactions

Diuretics
When taking valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide with a diuretic, your blood pressure may decrease too much. This is more likely to occur when valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide is first started. In order to decrease the chances of this interaction, your healthcare provider may change the dosages of either medicine, start you on a lower dose of valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide, and/or monitor you more closely.

Potassium Supplements or Salt Substitutes With Potassium
If you are taking valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide along with a potassium supplement or a salt substitute with potassium, the levels of potassium in your blood may become too high. This can cause serious problems. Talk with your healthcare provider about using potassium and valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide together.

Potassium-Sparing Diuretics
If you are taking both valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide and a potassium-sparing diuretic, your body may metabolize the medicines differently than intended and/or increase the levels of potassium in your blood. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor your progress closely.

Lithium (Eskalith, Lithane, Lithonate, Lithotabs)
If you are taking both valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide and lithium, your body may metabolize the drugs differently than intended and increase the lithium levels in the blood. For this reason, lithium is generally not recommended in people taking valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide.

Insulin
Taking insulin with valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide may cause high blood sugar (hyperglycemia). If you are taking these medications together, your healthcare provider may monitor you more closely and/or adjust your dose of insulin as needed.
