Ziac and Pregnancy

The full risks of using Ziac (bisoprolol and hydrochlorothiazide) during pregnancy are not known at this time. When the bisoprolol component of the medication was given in high doses to pregnant rats and rabbits during clinical studies, it increased the risk of miscarriages. If you become pregnant while taking Ziac, your healthcare provider will consider the benefits and risks in your particular situation.

Can You Take Ziac When Pregnant?

Ziac^® (bisoprolol and hydrochlorothiazide) is a prescription medication used for high blood pressure. It contains two different active ingredients: bisoprolol (a beta blocker) and hydrochlorothiazide (a "thiazide" diuretic). Ziac may not be safe for use during pregnancy, although the full risks are currently unknown.

S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses a category system to classify the possible risks to a fetus when a specific medicine is taken during pregnancy. Pregnancy Category C is given to medicines that have not been studied in pregnant humans but that do appear to cause harm to the fetus in animal studies. Also, medicines that have not been studied in any pregnant women or animals are automatically given a pregnancy Category C rating.

Ziac was given a pregnancy Category C rating due to the bisoprolol component, which itself is a Category C medication. The hydrochlorothiazide component has a Category B rating, which means that it is probably safe for use during pregnancy (see Hydrochlorothiazide and Pregnancy for more information).
